She/Her

Laurie’s journey began in New Jersey, where she studied Interior Design and cultivated her natural creativity. Over the years, her career path expanded to include leadership and people-centered roles—serving as a Program Director at a local Catholic school and later as a Talent Acquisition Coordinator for a national retail chain.

Through these experiences, Laurie developed a strong foundation in empathy, relationship-building, and community engagement. She joined NEST through UniteCT, bringing with her not only diverse professional expertise but also a deep commitment to helping people thrive.

As Development Assistant, Laurie is eager to put her creativity, interpersonal skills, and passion for equity into action. She looks forward to building meaningful connections that strengthen partnerships, expand resources, and ultimately help create stronger, more equitable communities.

My Story

When did you join NEST?

September 2021

Why did you decide to join NEST?

I joined NEST during an unprecedented time, just as we were coming out of the first year of COVID-19. Having been directly impacted by the pandemic myself, I saw an opportunity to help others who were navigating similar struggles through the UniteCT program. More than three and a half years later, I’m still here—because I am passionate about NEST’s mission and know that my personal values align deeply with the organization’s culture.

What is it about NEST that has kept you engaged with our work/mission?

For me, it’s the strong sense of community. NEST doesn’t just serve neighborhoods—it also cares for its own team in meaningful ways. Over the years, I’ve had a front row seat to see the impact NEST has on families and communities well beyond UniteCT. That perspective has made me want to continue my career here. I wholeheartedly believe in equity and community, and NEST provides the space where my professional skills and core beliefs work in harmony.

Please share a memory or story from your time at NEST.

When I was a Case Supervisor for UniteCT, I once called a client to confirm details for her application. While we were speaking, she became emotional as the news reported on a mass shooting. She broke down in tears, apologizing repeatedly for being unable to focus. I reassured her that it was okay—we all need someone to listen sometimes. By the end of the call, she thanked me for my patience and said she would keep me in her prayers. I told her I’d do the same. That conversation left me teary-eyed, and it reminded me of something I deeply believe: professionalism and empathy are not opposites—they can, and should, coexist.

Looking forward, what are your greatest hopes for the future of NEST?

I hope to see NEST continue to grow steadily so that we can keep expanding our impact in neighborhoods and communities of choice. I would also love to see us introduce programs designed for children and young adults—helping them learn the value of community-building from an early age.

What are 3+ things you like to do in your spare time?

In my free time, I enjoy cooking for family and friends, stargazing, and creating beautiful spaces—whether it’s an interior design project, an event, or holiday decorating.
